How to Become a Wedding Planner- Top Wedding Planning Courses
Ever watched ‘The Wedding Planner’ with Jennifer Lopez and thought- wow- I wouldn’t mind doing that?
Wedding planners are certainly in high demand in Australia- with the wedding industry booming, wedding planners are more in demand than ever! Wedding planning as a profession in Australia is slightly different to how J-LO portrays in the movie! ( No- you’re not running around with a head-set on!)
The job is varied: you can be a wedding coordinator at a reception venue, a wedding stylist- who is responsible for making the ceremony and reception look beautiful, or a wedding planner that will book in all the services for the bride such as photographer, celebrant, DJ, Venue, decorations etc.
So- sounds like an exciting career doesn’t it?! So the next question you are probably asking is- how do I get into the Wedding Industry? Here are our top 5 tips to becoming a wedding planner….
Top 5 Tips to Becoming a Wedding Planner
Wedding Planner Tip 1: Get some sort of qualification, or do some sort of study in wedding planning. A Certificate always looks good in your portfolio, and if you were to apply for a wedding coordination job somewhere, the fact that you have studied wedding planning will put you miles ahead of other applicants. You don’t necessarily need to get a Diploma of wedding planning, but just a certificate level will do- and a strong portfolio.
Wedding Planner Tip 2: Get some work experience. Ask around local wedding companies, and see if you can give them a hand on a few weddings. Many women fall in love with wedding planning after doing their own wedding. But getting some experience beyond your own wedding will help diversify your portfolio and experience, and show future clients that you have actually worked in the field professionally, as opposed to doing your own personal wedding.
Wedding Planner Tip 3: Keep a portfolio, and start building up ideas for weddings- Keep clippings of different ideas for cakes, venues, stationary and decorations. This will be a valuable resource when meeting with clients in the future, as you can show them your ideas, and options available.
Wedding Planner Tip 4: Learn how to compile mood boards. A mood board is like a vision board- which has a common theme on it, and inspiration pics that capture a particular style. Putting together a mood board for a client will really help the client understand your vision, and see how it will all be put together! ( and it looks extremely professional!)
Wedding Planner Tip 5: Get to know your local wedding suppliers, and start collecting their pricing and catalogues, and know the scope of work they do. Every supplier is different, has a unique style, and different products. That’s why its a good idea to know a few different cake makers, videographers, celebrants and so forth. This will help you to point your client in the right direction later on.
Top Wedding Planning Courses
As we mentioned before, studying wedding planning is the first step to starting your career as a wedding planner.
There are many different wedding planning courses out there- but not all of them will give you the practical and ‘realistic’ training that you need to be successful in the industry. Some courses can also be dated, teaching old wedding planning tips that are irrelevant today, or old fashioned. Its important to choose a course program that has a large focus on current wedding trends, and an ‘industry’ prospective. ( put it this way- would you rather learn from a teacher at TAFE that has been stuck in a classroom for the last 10 years- or from a real life wedding planning company- or wedding planner- who has been successful in the industry?)
